For most NGOs, fundraising plays a crucial role in their organization’s success. It helps them carry out their mission and maintain their vision.
Knowing how to navigate this very important aspect of your organization’s survival may seem daunting. Here are five (5) things to note about fundraising for NGOs
1. Know Your Organization
As a non-profit organization, you have to know yourself by assessing your strengths, weaknesses and potential to achieve your goals. Make sure that your vision and mission is clear and concrete. Ask yourself questions like, “why would I support this business, if I could?” “What would I like this organization to accomplish in a few years?” etc. Having questions like this in mind would help you to be better prepared to give answers to potential donors.
2. Create a Fundraising Campaign Strategy
Armed with the knowledge of the previous step, the next step is to create a campaign strategy. This will include setting up a team that would carry out research on potential donors. They would also be able to create a proposal for the funding as needed.
3. Create a Killer Proposal
Your fundraising team should be able to come up with a simple, yet effective proposal. Your proposal’s language should be easy to understand and not overly complex. Your proposal should also be able to inform the prospective donors of why they should donate to your cause. It should be appealing enough to get their support.
4. Promote Your Fundraising Campaign
Your campaign should be promoted via various social media platforms, word of mouth, email and other digital marketing channels. This would help those interested to see what you are doing and perhaps donate to your cause. You could also send a message to donors directly. Be careful however not to pitch your proposal right away without first understanding the needs of your donor.
5. Be a Good Steward
Ensure that you’ve learnt effective lessons on stewardship over the years. You will need to know how to effectively manage the resources you’ll be getting, to ensure maximum utilization and satisfaction for both you and your donors. A study on economics and business development would not be a bad investment at this point.
Having these few tips in mind would make fundraising a walk in the park for you and your organization.
